Transport Security

The National Counter Terrorism Security Office and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure both support the Department for Transport Security and Contingencies Directorate (TRANSEC) and other partners by providing protective security advice through our network of Counter Terrorism Security Advisers to transport infrastructure sites across the United Kingdom. In line with our mission statement, we aim to improve physical security and heighten awareness of the threat from terrorism to both staff and the travelling public.

The CPNI has published new guidance on how to protect against vehicle borne explosive devices utilising what is called Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (see 'Integrated Security - A Public Realm Design Guide for Hostile Vehicle Mitigation'). The guide introduces site security managers to the principles of hostile vehicle mitigation and how products are designed, tested and installed to provide appropriate protection. These standards are referred to as Publicly Available Specifications 68 and 69. See PAS 68: 2010 Impact test specifications for vehicle security barriers - for guidance on impact test methods, tolerances, test vehicle type and vehicle performance criteria, (this standard provides assurance to organisations that a vehicle security barrier will offer a specific level of hostile vehicle impact resistance), and PAS 69: 2006 Guidance for the selection, installation an use of vehicle security barriers - for detailed guidance aimed at designers, planners, architects and security managers to ensure that hostile vehicle mitigation solutions are deployed effectively.
