Higher and Further Education institutions

Higher and Further Education institutions are vital to the development of the UK. They are not only centres for essential learning and research; they also encourage an understanding of diversity and culture within our society. Many institutions have large student intakes from across the UK and overseas, and for many students this can be their first protracted period away from home, which can make them feel vulnerable and unprotected, especially in the light of recent events at several institutions.

NaCTSO has researched and produced a guidance booklet on Counter Terrorism Protective Security Advice for Higher and Further Education (1 mb pdf), which aims to identify simple and effective advice suitable for all institutions. The principles and procedures outlined in this booklet are based on recommendations derived from the experience of experts, aiming to reduce the risk for students, staff and visitors through knowledge and learning.

Planning and preparation for such events can often take months if not years to put in place. An early understanding of the security issues involved can not only save time but reduce costs by incorporating identified measures before advanced plans are developed.

Each institution will require unique site-specific advice to complement this generic guidance. For further assistance please contact your Counter Terrorism Security Advisor (CTSA) through your local police service.
