Crowded Places - Visitor Attractions

Visitor attractions

Tourism is a most important and fast growing industry. It is also one of the most vulnerable, offering terrorists and organised criminals a range of high profile targets. Visitor Attractions may be particularly at risk, as they are often important cultural, religious or political symbols often with limited protective security measures in place.

Visitor’s enjoyment is the principal objective of the owners and managers of all attractions. This requires a safe environment.

NaCTSO, in partnership with the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions (BALPPA) and the Visitor Attraction Forum, has researched, developed and published Counter Terrorism Protective Security Advice for Visitor Attractions (6.4mb pdf)

Much of what the Guidance contains is common sense. The context, the principles and the processes that are recommended are derived from the experience of experts. These are unlikely to come naturally to busy managers and employees in Attractions in any emergency.

Visitor attractionsIt is against this background that the Guidance in this document is so valuable. Effective contingency planning is essential. Every Attraction owner and manager is urged to review this document and initiate such measures and preparations, procedures and training, as they see is appropriate to their specific circumstances.

For site specific advice relating to your premises, contact your Counter Terrorism Security Adviser (CTSA) through your local police service.
